What is Lisdexamfetamine?

Lisdexamfetamine is a medication used to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and binge eating disorder. It helps increase attention and decrease impulsiveness and hyperactivity in patients with ADHD.

How to Take Lisdexamfetamine:

  • Take this medication by mouth as directed by your doctor, usually once daily in the morning.
  • You may take it with or without food.
  • Swallow the capsule whole; do not crush or chew it. If you have difficulty swallowing, you may open the capsule and mix the contents with water, orange juice, or yogurt. Drink or eat the mixture immediately.
  • If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not double the dose to catch up.

Possible Side Effects:

Common side effects include:

  • Nervousness
  • Trouble sleeping (insomnia)
  • Loss of appetite
  • Weight loss
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Dry mouth

Serious side effects (seek medical help immediately):

  • Fast/pounding/irregular heartbeat
  • Mental/mood/behavior changes (such as agitation, aggression, mood swings, depression, abnormal thoughts)
  • Uncontrolled movements or sounds
  • Vision changes
  • Signs of blood flow problems in the fingers or toes (such as coldness, numbness, pain, or skin color changes)

Precautions:

  • Inform your doctor of your medical history, especially of: high blood pressure, heart problems, mental/mood conditions, family history of heart problems, and any other medications you are taking.
  • This medication may make you dizzy. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs alertness until you can do it safely.
  • Avoid alcoholic beverages while taking this medication.
  • Regularly check your blood pressure and report any significant changes to your doctor.

Storage:

  • Store at room temperature away from light and moisture.
  • Keep out of reach of children.

When to Contact Your Doctor:

  • If you experience any serious side effects or signs of an allergic reaction (such as rash, itching/swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing).
  • If your condition does not improve or if it worsens.

Additional Information:

  • This medication may be habit-forming. Use it exactly as prescribed to lower the risk of addiction.
  • Do not stop taking this medication without consulting your doctor, as you may need to gradually reduce the dose.
